Technology should be harnessed better to give the world’s estimated 650 million disabled people improved access to the Internet, experts said here on Tuesday. “One of the fundamental problems has been not consulting persons with disabilities when designing technologies,” Cynthia Waddel of the Dynamic Coalition on Accessibility and Disability (DADC)
On many projects I am on, web accessibility is treated as a dictatorial pain, rather than what it is – accessibility to those with disabilities. 650 million disabled users (even assuming a ballpark figure, we can still assume hundreds of millions), is a large web audience demographic , yet companies ignore that time and time again – even with disabled users within their own company! The positive flip side of observing web accessibility is it is encourages betting coding practices. Or maybe you think things like correct web page titles, alternative text for images, correct tabbing order on fields is beneath your consideration. Well, say goodbye to a large potential audience, including damaging your site SEO. Ignoring users when you are building a web site/application is ignoring the point! Even in this day and age, sadly there has been little advance.
